Steele's Scouts Bring The Wild West to Shelby.

A large crowd gathered on Shelby's Main Street Tuesday, June 20, as an unusual sight filled the street with horses and riders donning uniforms from over a century ago when the Steele's Scouts rode through town.

The tradition dates back to 1873, when Northwest Mounted Police (NWMP) Inspector Sam Steele began inspecting his small, but effective, scouts that September.

The Steele’s Scouts Cavalry re-enacted a March along the Whoop-Up Trail from Sweetgrass to Fort Benton, Montana

The City of Fort Benton and River and Plains Society of Fort Benton invited the Troop once again. This is the third commemorative March to Fort Benton, previous visits were in 1989 and 1996.

The ride started at Sweetgrass, Montana along the US/Canadian border in full uniform on horseback, and proceeded to follow the original Whoop-Up trail as the guests of local ranchers arriving at Shelby, Montana for inspection and presentation ceremony. Our local guides, Charlotte and Gerry led us to the original stone markers of the Whoop-up trail in several locations. The markers are a circle of stones surrounding a W. Tepee-rings indicating camps of the original Plains Indians and in many areas the original deep ruts of the Bull Trains are still seen as the land owners are very respectful of- the history of the Whoop-Up Trail.

They then proceeded to Fort Benton along the Whoop-Up trail arriving for a presentation to the Mayor of Fort Benton and an inspection of the troop by our Colonel in Chief. The Troop participated in Fort Benton’s Summer Celebration including the Parade; a Smoke with the Blackfeet Nation and a Cavalry drill demonstration. Sunday included a dedication of Fort Benton as a location on the Nez Perce Trail and the new Upper Missouri River Breaks Interpretative Center.

After the 6 am reveille bugle call and morning chores the 23 member Troop left camp each day at 8 am travelling about 25 miles per day done in traditional Cavalry gaits of walk, trot and canter as well as practicing Cavalry Drills on the move. The troop is a colourful sight with scouting party out front, officers with bugler and colour party flying the Union Jack, Steele’s Scouts and Calgary flags. Complete with packhorse the formation varies, travelling mostly in half sections or full sections or troop in line anchored by the Guidon Flag. The rattle of sabres and clink of spurs is in time with the drumming of the horses’ hooves in unison.

Montana is well named as Big Sky country. The views of the Marias and Teton River valleys were spectacular. We were left with a deep appreciation of the efforts of the early freighters and homesteaders along the Whoop-Up Trail. The welcoming view of the Missouri River Valley was a fitting completion to the March for a group who loves Western History and horses.

The Troop originates back to 1885 during the North West Rebellion, Sam Steele, Inspector of the NWMP was called back to Calgary and asked to form a scouting troop to support the Alberta Field Force. Sam Steele recruited local cowboys and ranchers to volunteer and a number of NWMP to form the militia cavalry troop.

In 1977, the Commemorative Troop Association was formed in Calgary and has re-created the Marches of the Originals. Clad in replica apparel of Buckskins or the NWMP Uniform from that era, the Troop appears at many high profile events. They are favorites at parades such as the Calgary Stampede Parade and have stood guard at Spruce Meadows since 1977.
